Polish premiere of award-winning "Precious" in april
OFF Plus CAMERA is proud to announce its presentation of Lee Daniels’ intense and moving film “Precious”, which has been celebrated left and right this award season.
Set in 1987 in Harlem, the film tells the story of 16-year-old Claireece Precious Jones and her struggles to cope with domestic and psychological abuse, incest, illiteracy, and obesity. Precious’s homelife is a nightmare, as she suffers daily from the violent whims of her scornful shut-in mother and the experience of having been impregnated twice by her drug-addicted father. In school and on the street she is faced with more ridicule and abuse, and it is only through enrolling in an alternative high school that she is able to see changes in her life.
Through the help of her reading and writing teacher Ms. Rain, her animated classmates, and her social worker Ms. Weiss (played by Mariah Carey), the world begins to open up for Precious. We witness her striving for direction and peace in her life as she learns about the importance of love and creativity in the world. But will that provide Precious with enough strength to overcome the tremendous trials of her daily life?
Not only will this be the premiere of “Precious” in Poland, but it will also be part of OFF Plus CAMERA’s DISCOVERIES program, which is to feature the most impressive films from top festivals around the world. “Precious” has has been a huge success on the awards circuit, and in addition to winning both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Award at Sundance, it received the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
